So I came across this great article in the Huffington Post about a nail artist in New York named Ami Vega who specialises in social commentary nail art. She says many of her clients come to her with ideas like Black Lives Matter and LGBT related ideas for nail art. She then collaborates with them to bring their ideas to life on their nails.
Nail Art as Street Art
Expressing views on social issues like feminism, racial inequality and cultural pride with nail art is to challenge perceptions in a unique and very personal way. The article goes on to liken nail art to street art - an ongoing, edgy expression of the self and a reflection of the social zeitgeist - as opposed to simply a question of vanity. As one can see on Ami's Instagram, she's doing fabulous work and it's all done by hand!
Go and check it out, I thought it was totally worth the read.
What are your thoughts? Does nail art express vanity or personal world view. Do you express your beliefs and values on your nails? Do you think printed nail art infringes on this concept or compliments it?
